The “Q” year
The year 2017 marks the bicentennial of the death of Giacomo Quarenghi, the famous neoclassical architect and draughtsman (Bergamo 1744 – St. Petersburg 1817). He is recognised as one of the leading protagonists in the artistic culture of the European 18th century; he takes part into the creation of the first modern international language becoming a true arbiter of the Neoclassical taste in Russia. He was invited by the Empress Catherine II of Russia to St. Petersburg, where started his brilliant career as a court architect for the Tzars. The quantity and the variety and of his projects, most of which carried out, are unequalled.
Leading cultural institutions have created an International Committee for the celebrations, coordinated by Comune di Bergamo and Osservatorio Quarenghi. Next to it, a Bergamo Network will take part with its own initiatives. Throughout 2017 a widespread programme of events will celebrate the artistic grandeur of Giacomo Quarenghi in Europe, in the town and on its territory.
